Terpene Pairing: Curio Wellness x Cushwa Brewing Company

January 12, 2020 by Shannon Sweeney

This all really started when I fell head over heels in love with DSCT from Curio Wellness. This broad-leaf cultivar is a cross between Dark Star x Chemdawg x Tangie. The THCa is 30.9% and, notably, β-Myrcene is 1.03%. When I took my first sniff, it immediately reminded me of my favorite wine, Nebbiolo, an Italian red known for it’s unique flavor profile. The flowers’ pungent earthy aromas of moss & wood present first, but distant floral and herbaceous aromas creep in and leave you with a slightly sweet, yet tangy finish. After a glass of Nebbiolo, I realized it wasn’t clicking on my palate like I wanted it to. Frustrated and hungry, I decided to call it quits for the night. I ate an edible, ordered Chinese food, and watched a few episodes of ‘You’ on Netflix.

The next morning I started to think outside of the box. What if the perfect pairing wasn’t a wine at all? With the β-Myrcene reigning over all the other terpenes, I decided to play off the earthiness in this cultivar and pair it with a hoppy beer, ideally one with bright citrus notes. For my brewery I wanted to stay local, and immediately found a few things I wanted to try at Cushwa Brewing Company in Williamsport, MD. I decided on a flight of six. I really enjoyed the ‘Karmic Event’- an IPA with tons of citrus notes and the ‘Apple Thief’, a cider/grain blend. In the end, I decided to take home a can of ‘Fog at Daybreak’, a pale ale with hoppy & herby notes. When I drink this beer, I imagine myself standing in the Redwood National Park- breathing in the organic petrichor of the forest air- rich with terpenes from the mushrooms, decaying wood, and pine needles. It’s earthy- It’s herby- It’s citrusy. This was, in fact, the perfect pairing.

Harvest Season: An Inside Look at SunMed Growers

October 02, 2019 by Shannon Sweeney

Medicine from the Sun

I’ve been having a terrible month. I was craving a road trip. I wanted to see the bay, to be by the water. It would be good for my soul right about now. However, it would be unlike me to go anywhere without purpose, so a few days prior I sent an email to SunMed Growers out in Cecil County, MD. I explained that I had toured an indoor grow in Washington County and I wanted to see what a natural sunlight grow was like. The email was forwarded to Mr. Paul Quill, who invited me to come do a tour of their facility.

The drive was easy, a mix of highway and backroads. I arrived a little before 1pm and was checked into the facility where I met Paul. We sat down for a few minutes and chatted back and forth. He explained that the president of SunMed, Jake Van Wingerden, is a third generation greenhouse grower who has many years of experience in the wholesale nursery business. He started SunMed, and after upwards of three years of planning and building their first product was sent to the Maryland Cannabis Program in March of 2018. Paul was brought in to help. He had a 28 year career in law enforcement here in Maryland and also worked for the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission before coming to SunMed- where he handles a little bit of everything- a jack of all trades!

We suited up for the tour: lab coats, hair nets, shoe covers. In the first room, I met a group of employees who were responsible for trimming the buds. They have a series of machines that de-stem and tumble the flower, and another that sorts it by nug size. This is then followed by hand trimming. The shake is never wasted, instead all the trimmings are added to a large compost pile.

From the trimming room we made our way to the greenhouse entrance and when we entered the main growing space it took my breath away. A 60,000 square foot sea of green pot plants. The sunlight hit my face and the warm air filled my lungs- it was almost impossible to feel anything but absolute gratitude and happiness in that moment. Anything that was on my mind earlier was fading away with each breath. The Dutch-style greenhouse was brought in piece by piece from Holland and assembled on-site. The plants are suspended on rolling tracks throughout the whole greenhouse, which makes for an incredibly functional use of space when it comes time to rotate the plants throughout the building.

SunMed grows over 100 different strains, including, the classics: Sour Diesel & Northern Lights, CBD dominant strains like Pennywise & ACDC, and some of my personal favorites: Purple Punch & Durban Thai x Cindy 99. They have a strong core focus on sustainability. Instead of applying pesticides, they opt to use predatory mites and ladybugs. They have hundreds of fans to maintain good air circulation- which creates stronger plants & prevents any environment where mold could grow. A state-of-the-art climate control system keeps each room at the proper humidity and temperature. Paul explained that SunMed is one of only two natural-sunlight cannabis grows in Maryland. They do also have supplemental lighting for cloudy days and certain stages of growth where extra sunlight is necessary. Paul walked me out back where construction crews were hard at work laying the footing for another 120,000 square feet of greenhouse.

From the greenhouse, we made our way into the drying room, which is kept at a much cooler temperature. The plants are hung upside down immediately after harvest to allow all the terpenes to flow into the flower before it’s trimmed and packaged. A freshly cut batch of Chem Dawg x Skunk No. 6 was hanging in the first room, it smelt like a fresh cut lawn- almost so much so that it was hard to distinguish it as marijuana. The next room was a few days further into the drying process, and the smell was much sweeter. The last room was filled with gray plastic tubs. Inside the tubs were huge bags of un-trimmed flower. Paul opened one of the airtight bags to toss, or “burp”, the flower which allows for even drying. The strain was called Clementine and the aroma was SPOT ON! Can’t wait to try this one in a few months.

fullsizeoutput_31f.jpeg fullsizeoutput_321.jpeg fullsizeoutput_320.jpeg

From there, we went to packaging where I got to watch pre-rolls being made. The woman loaded up the Raw 98 specials into a machine and took what basically looked like a giant dugout and filled up each little vessel with bud- packing it tight. She attached the two pieces together, turned the machine on, and within a few minutes she had 50 perfectly packed pre-rolls. I saw a couple other cool pieces of machinery, including one that perfectly weighs and packages the flower, before Paul led me back to the front room where we started the tour. Just as we were ending the tour we ran into the president, Jake Van Wingerden, who welcomed me to the facility. They loaded me up with some swag: a trucker hat, some lighters, a lanyard, and some pens- before sending me on my way. I got in my car and immediately turned on my camera to go through my shots. What an awesome experience. Many thanks to Paul, Jake, and the team at SunMed for the warm welcome! Happy Harvest!

There Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, but Money Does Grow on Trees

September 17, 2019 by Shannon Sweeney

I was like a kid the night before Christmas. Giddy with excitement. I had my outfit washed & laid out on my bed. My camera battery was charged. I closed my eyes but I don’t think I slept a wink.
“Tomorrow I’m going to tour my first grow!”, I thought to myself in disbelief.

“This must be it.”, said my friend, Dori, as we turned onto a quiet street in the old, industrial end of Hagerstown. It was pretty un-assuming from the outside. A massive, pale yellow building, riddled with cameras. We were buzzed into the gated parking lot and met at the door by a cheery man in a stark white lab coat. “I’m Dave, by the way, I don’t think we’ve met.” he said politely as we shook hands.

He ushered us inside where a lady took our ID’s and made visitor passes for us. They had to be worn and visible at all times. We were briefed on the rules. Don’t touch anything. No cameras. No outside contaminants. He led us down a series of white hallways until we reached the employee changing area. He gave us each a ‘Nature’s Heritage’ lab coat and surgical booties to cover our shoes. And so began the tour!

The whole thing was set straight out of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. We followed Dave down several long, white hallways and he would buzz us into the next door which opened up to more long white hallways. If it wasn’t for the map posted on the wall every few feet I would’ve been lost. He explained that the building was the old Statton Furniture Manufacturing Plant and had an 11 million dollar rehab done to convert it into what it is now, Kind Therapeutics USA.

I knew we had to be getting close to the grow rooms because the odor was getting stronger and stronger. What happened next was something I won’t ever forget. We reached two steel fire doors where I could faintly hear music playing on the other side. When he buzzed us in it was like getting smacked in the face with pure terpene goodness. When I say my mood instantly went from anxious to bliss I am not exaggerating. At the max volume on this bluetooth speaker bellowed the first guitar riff from Cage the Elephant’s ‘Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked’. I turned to look at Dori and we smiled. This was heaven. “They think the music is good for the plants!”, Dave shouted over the bass. “I’m sure!” said Dori, “It’s good for the worker’s too!”. We all laughed.

He began to discuss the life cycle of the cannabis plant, noting that their facility does not grow from seed- only clones. The first room he took us to was the mothers. ‘Mothers’ are grown specifically for cloning purposes and are kept in a constant vegetative stage. The plants were massive, and almost ornamental in value- like a Christmas tree- or a bonsai. The next couple rooms were all different strains in various stages of the flowering cycle. Each time we buzzed into a door the terpenes were enough to knock you off your feet. It smelled like the dispensary does- times a thousand.

My favorite was a room full of ‘Oro Blanco’, an indica-dominant hybrid from Nature’s Heritage. It was set to harvest the next day so it was essentially full grown. The buds were heavy and frosted in trichomes. The sweet diesel-y aroma was so strong it almost gave me a headache. After that we toured the cloning room, the trimming room, the drying room, and the lab where they do CO2 extractions. The first thing I noticed is that everyone who works here seems genuinely happy to be there. We were greeted with smiles and waves as we entered every room.

Policies are ever-changing and the recent decision to allow the sale of edibles in Maryland is going to greatly and positively impact many patients who do not seek the benefit from smoking cannabis, rather ingesting it in the form of mints, hard candies, and gummies. Dave showed us the beginning of the construction on the edibles kitchen- but that’s not the only expansion they will be doing this year- another wing of grow rooms and a Hydro-Carbon extractor will be added soon.

I am shocked by the thoughtful precision that the folks here at Kind Therapeutics have put into every square inch of their facility. From the state-of-the-art grow rooms to their strict purity standards- there is much to be proud of here- but at the end of the day, giving the patients of Maryland access to safe & reliable cannabis is the goal, and they’re doing just that.

Wine Tasting Wednesday: Hillsborough Vineyards & Brewery

September 05, 2019 by Shannon Sweeney

It’s been a personal goal of mine to visit a new winery every week. This week, I set my sights on Hillsborough Vineyards & Brewery. As I pulled up the steep driveway, I noticed a quaint stone building with one of the most stunning outdoor seating areas I had ever seen. As someone who has an appreciation for horticulture, it is important to note how lush and inviting their grounds were.

I made my way down the pathway into the main building and found myself at the wine tasting bar where very kind woman guided me through a tasting of two whites, two reds, and two rosés. Afterwards, I decided to sit outside and enjoy a flight of three ‘Vintner’s Selection’ wines. I love going wine tasting in the middle of the week because it is less crowded and you often get a more personalized experience. I felt a little bit like Alice in Wonderland (pre-rabbit hole) when I tucked myself into the furthest, most quiet corner of the patio. I was surrounded by old, twisted vines and beautiful rose bushes. The birds were singing, the cicadas were buzzing, I was alone- and for a moment- I thought this was all something out of a dream.

fullsizeoutput_282.jpeg

Vintner’s Selection

The first wine in my flight was ‘Opal’, 100% Petit Manseng, a favorite grape of Virginia growers. What’s interesting is that they are aging this 8 months in acacia wood barrels which lends this wine it’s bright, tropical fruit flavors.
While I had my sights set on a red for today’s cannabis pairing- this wine had me
second-guessing that decision.

Next up was ‘Bloodstone’, 100% Fer Servadou, a rare varietal originating from Southwest France. Subtle dark fruits blend with the earthiness, making for a lot of character. They’re aging this 18 months in French oak barrels, giving it a beautiful velvety finish.
This wine was something special and I may or may not have taken a bottle home for myself.

Last- but not least, ‘Onyx’, 100% Tannat, aged in French oak barrels for 18-30 months. Tart cherry & cranberry notes on the front of the palate with a subtle cocoa finish.
I imagine this wine with a nice steak or cigar.

After my flight of wines I returned my empties to the tasting room & purchased a bottle of Bloodstone to enjoy later with a half gram joint of Sour Diesel. This Sativa-Dominant strain is heavy in Myrcene & Limonene. I decided to play up the pungent, industrial notes in the cannabis and pair it with the earthy, musky undertones of the Fer Servadou grape. And, of course, you can’t go to Loudoun County without stopping at Monk’s BBQ for a pulled pork sandwich!

The first day of the rest of my life.

August 15, 2019 by Shannon Sweeney

It started off as every other Wednesday. I was at the park near my house getting a quick workout in. In between exercises I started to check my email. Most of it was junk. But then, “Wait..”, I said in my head. Or maybe out loud? I can’t remember. It was from some random ‘do not reply’ email address, with the subject line reading “Notification: Application Approved”. Instantly the biggest feeling of relief washed over me. Today was no other Wednesday, it was the first day of the rest of my life.

Okay, that might be dramatic, but hear me out. I was never much of a drinker, which would really surprise some people considering my family history. I first smoked pot in high school with a few close friends at a sleepover. I had to have been 16 years old at this point. I’m 99% sure we smoked out of a coke can and blew the smoke out of her bedroom window. We laughed until we cried. I was the absolute best version of myself that night, without a care in the world other than enjoying that exact fleeting moment in my life. Thus started my habitual cannabis use.

I’ve now been smoking weed for the better half of my life. Mostly recreationally- but I’ve found that it also helps with my chronic migraines, generalized anxiety, and hypoglycemia. Someone recently asked me when I was going to stop smoking and it really rubbed me the wrong way. Why can’t I smoke a J at the end of a long day? Is it really any different than someone enjoying a glass of wine or a few beers? Why is there still such a stigma surrounding casual cannabis use? I did some serious research into becoming legal and ultimately made my decision after acquiring a bad batch of wax.

For me, the deciding factors were:

  • All the dispensary products are laboratory tested

  • I can get stuff whenever I want and I don’t have to wait for my guy to hit me back

  • I can get an array of products & use them when I see fit (i.e. Sativa in the AM, Indica in the PM)

Steps to becoming a legal cannabis patient in Maryland

  1. Go get a passport photo taken. I went to CVS. Make sure it’s one that has a photo center!
Click here for a $2.00 coupon off your passport photo at any CVS

  2. Create an account online with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission and register as a patient. This is where you will link your scanned passport photo, this step always messes people up.
There is a $50 non-refundable fee to apply. It’s also important to note that they can only accept a certain number of applications within a specific timeframe, therefore, getting your application approved by the state is the longest step.

  3. You’ll get an email from the state letting you know your application was approved (it took me 6 weeks to get mine) and that’s when you can go to the doctor to get your prescription! Follow this link to see a full list of certified providers in the state of MD. I went to Urbn Holistic in Urbana and saw Mike. They have walk-in hours from 10am-4pm on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The experience was so professional and seamless! I filled out a few intake forms and we sat down to discuss what I would be using the medical cannabis for. I explained that I had used cannabis in the past to treat my anxiety (for which I had previously been treating with Paxil). He made me feel comfortable, accepted, and even went on to discuss which strains he felt would be best for my anxiety & which ones I should steer clear of. He printed off my temporary prescription and 15 minutes later I was walking into my first dispensary.

  4. Since I was already in Urbana, and I needed to commemorate my first day as a legal patient, I decided to go down the road to Kannavis and pick up a few treats for myself. I ran into a childhood friend who happened to work there and she welcomed me with the biggest smile. I felt relieved because, for someone with anxiety, this can be a very unnerving process. She took the prescription that I had just gotten and scanned my info into their system. She explained that since it was my first time I would also get 20% off today (awesome, but I should’ve brought more cash). It was maybe five minutes before I got called into the back where two bars are set up on either side of the room. There were registers lined on each side with little numbers in front of them. “I’ll take you at register one ma’am!”, said a young man with a bright smile on his face. I told him I wasn’t sure what I wanted and that it was my first time and he gave me the crash course. I was a little overwhelmed by the selection and all the information, but I ended up with a few pre-rolled joints of different hybrids to see which one I liked before buying a whole eighth.

Tips + Tricks I think might be useful

  • Dispensaries are cash-only , but most of them have ATM’s on-site

  • You’re not allowed to touch the products. If you have a question, just ask your bud tender.

  • Most dispensaries have their inventory online so you can narrow it down before you get there.
Weed Maps is my go-to site to browse local selections.

  • Check with your dispensary about discounts and deals! Kannavis has daily specials and a Kona Ice truck on Sundays :)
